
Car Insurance in Montana
MT state law that requires all motor vehicles have liability
insurance. Owners shall continuously provide insurance of not less than:
$25,000 - Bodily Injury or Death of one person in any one
accident.
$50,000 - Bodily Injury or Death of two persons in any one
accident.
$10,000 - Injury to or destruction of property of others in
any one accident.
This Montana auto insurance must be in effect in
vehicle being operated. You must carry your insurance card, issued by an insurance company, and exhibit it upon
demand by a law enforcement officer.
Operating a motor vehicle upon the roadways of Montana WITHOUT
a valid policy of liability insurance is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine not less than $250.00, nor to exceed
$500.00 or by imprisonment in the county jail for not more than 10 days or both; 5 points against your driving
record. A second or subsequent offense is punishable by a fine of not less than $350.00, or by imprisonment in the
county jail for not more than 10 days or both; suspension of your license plates and registration for 90 days (180
days for 3rd or subsequent offense).
Should you be involved in an accident, your license and
registration can be suspended if you are found liable for the damages in a court of law and you fail to satisfy
(pay) the judgment within sixty (60) days. Remember, suspension is automatic. It remains in force until the
judgment has been paid or six (6) years have elapsed. Additionally, you will be required to submit proof of motor
vehicle insurance.
The law also provides that owners of more than twenty-five
(25) motor vehicles registered in the State of Montana may qualify as self-insurers. In the case of nonresident
owners or operators who are involved in any accident in Montana, adequate insurance written by a company licensed
to do business in this state will be accepted. Non-residents owning or operating motor vehicles in Montana are
subject to all of the provisions and penalties of the Safety Responsibility Law and if they do not comply, their
driving privileges in the State of Montana will be withdrawn. A certified copy of the record will be sent to a
non-residents home state if it has a law authorizing authorities to act on
it.
